Total Defence Awards '09
Mega-Tech Industries (S) Pte Ltd, incorporated in 1991, is a manufacturer of air-conditioners and distributor of consumer electronics. A recipient of the Enterprise 50 Award for its contributions to economic development in Singapore in 1999 and 2000, the company has a wide global network of customers and suppliers that spans over 35 countries.
The company gives national defence a boost with a host of NS-friendly measures. Currently with five NSmen among its 25-strong team, Mega-Tech motivates its staff to pursue their best in their military roles by including their NS performance as a consideration in its annual performance appraisal. The company also monitors the schedules of its NSmen's In-Camp Training (ICT) and IPPT, so as to remind them before the slated dates.
Monetary rewards are given to NSmen who pass their IPPT, while early release or time-off for remedial training helps motivate those who have not done well. The company also promotes an active lifestyle among staff, by encouraging participation in SAFRA's sports activities and the use of the sports and fitness facilities at the country club where it is a corporate member.
Even during these tough economic times, Mega-Tech remains an unfaltering supporter of national defence. While other companies may request for ICT deferments so as to maximise their manpower in an increasingly competitive business environment, Mega-Tech prefers to embrace its NSmen's military duties in its operations.
Dr Richard Goh, its Managing Director, says "It doesn't take much for us to adapt our work plans around our NS employees' obligations. Rather than think of ways to stretch our resources simply to survive, we'd focus on making Mega-Tech a nimbler and more innovative company that can thrive in all times. Moreover, national security should never be taken for granted. The Minister for Defence Award strengthens our commitment to motivate our NS employees to do their best for Singapore's security, and to advocate the national defence cause to our business associates."
